Rila Monastery – A Place of Faith and History

Some places are important because of their history.

Rila Monastery is one of the few places where both come together.

Hidden among the forests of the Rila Mountains, it has been the spiritual centre of Bulgaria for more than a thousand years. Even today, despite being one of the country's most visited landmarks, it still feels surprisingly peaceful.

The Beginning

The story of the monastery begins in the 10th century with St. Ivan of Rila, the most respected saint in Bulgaria.

He chose to live as a hermit high in the mountains, away from towns and villages. His way of life attracted followers, who gradually formed a small monastic community nearby.

Over time, that community grew into what is now the largest and most important monastery in Bulgaria.

A Place That Preserved Bulgaria

Rila Monastery became much more than a religious centre.

During the centuries of Ottoman rule, when Bulgaria no longer existed as an independent state, the monastery helped preserve the country's language, culture and Orthodox traditions.

Generations of monks copied manuscripts, educated young Bulgarians and protected some of the nation's most valuable cultural treasures.

Because of its outstanding historical and architectural value, Rila Monastery was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1983.

The Monastery Today

The monastery you see today was largely rebuilt during the 19th century after a devastating fire.

Behind the high stone walls lies a spacious courtyard surrounded by elegant arcades and wooden galleries. At its centre stands the main church, famous for its colourful frescoes, carved wooden iconostasis and distinctive black-and-white striped domes.

It is one of the most recognizable views in Bulgaria.

More Than a Museum

Although thousands of people visit every year, Rila Monastery has never become simply a museum.

It is still an active monastery, home to a small community of monks who continue the traditions established here centuries ago.

That is part of what makes the atmosphere so different.

History is not displayed behind glass. It is still part of everyday life.

The Mountains Around It

The setting is just as impressive as the monastery itself.

Surrounded by dense forests and some of Bulgaria's highest peaks, Rila Monastery feels completely separated from the outside world.

Many visitors continue a little further into the mountains to visit the cave where St. Ivan of Rila once lived. The walk is short, quiet and offers a different perspective on the place where the monastery began.

Visiting Rila Monastery

Rila Monastery is located about two hours south of Sofia and is one of the most visited cultural sites in Bulgaria.

It can easily be seen in a few hours, but it is worth taking your time. Walking around the courtyard, looking at the frescoes and simply enjoying the mountain surroundings is very much part of the experience.

Like many places in Bulgaria, Rila Monastery becomes much more interesting once you understand the story behind it.

Then it is no longer just a beautiful monastery in the mountains, but a place that has shaped Bulgarian history for more than a thousand years.
