The Black Sea reveals one of its mysteries

October, 2016

Over 40 perfectly preserved shipwrecks have been discovered at the bottom of the Black Sea just off the Bulgarian coast. The earliest seems to be from the IX century, when the Eastern Roman empire was in control of the region. There were also many sunken Ottoman ships and a unique medieval Italian vessel dating back to XIII - XIV centuries located on 300 meters below the surface. Such a piece is the first to be found in the world and is considered to be a sample of the earliest ships the Italian city states used in their trade connections.

The explanation for the great conditions of the shipwrecks is that the oxygen level drops to zero below 150 meters, which is perfect for the preservation of organic materials.
