Plovdiv - European Capital of Culture for 2019.

Plovdiv is one of the oldest cities in the world and one of Europe's oldest continuously inhabited cities. A labyrinth of cobbled streets shaded by charming overhanging buildings recall its rich history - originally a Thracian settlement, later the capital of the Roman province of Thrace, before becoming part of the Bulgarian Kingdoms and the Ottoman empire, Plovdiv is a crossroads of ancient civilizations.

Originally situated on seven hills (just like Rome), the ancient and medieval Plovdiv combines millennia-old ruins with eighteen hundreds elegant houses and Bohemian lifestyle. Beauty and grace are built into the architectural heritage of the town under the hills, which is also an amazing cultural center. Not surprisingly, it was elected European Capital of Culture for 2019.
