Private Danube Wine Tour Bulgaria – Wineries & Historic Sites

This private tour combines wine, history and scenic landscapes along the Danube River – one of the most interesting yet less explored regions of Bulgaria.

Travel through the Danube plains and northwestern Bulgaria, visiting boutique wineries, Roman archaeological sites and historic towns, while discovering local wines and traditions.

The experience offers a different perspective on the country, away from the main tourist routes, and is ideal for travelers looking for something more authentic and less crowded.

The tour focuses on small wineries and regional producers, combined with cultural and historical landmarks that reveal the rich past of the Danube region.

Day 1 –
Drive from Varna towards the Danube plains. Along the way, visit Salla Estate and Tsarev Brod winery, known for producing the unique Bulgarian white grape variety Gergana, a cross between Dimyat and Muscat Ottonel.

Day 2 –
Morning visit to the Museum of Transport in Ruse, featuring an impressive collection of historic locomotives and royal carriages.

Continue with lunch and wine tasting at Leventa winery, located within a restored 19th-century fortress. In the afternoon, visit Seven Generations winery, offering panoramic views over the Danube River and the surrounding vineyards.

Day 3 – Visit the small family-owned Pirgovo winery, followed by a stop in Svishtov to explore the remains of Novae, a Roman legionary camp.

In the afternoon, drive towards Lukovit, with a visit to the impressive “Eyes of God” cave along the way.

Day 4 – Visit Burgozone winery, located near the ruins of an ancient Roman fort. Continue to Vidin, in the northwestern corner of Bulgaria.

Day 5 – Morning walk to the Baba Vida fortress, the best-preserved medieval castle in Bulgaria.

Continue to Magura winery, located near the famous Magura Cave, known for its prehistoric cave paintings dating back thousands of years.

Day 6 – Visit Borovitsa winery, set against the dramatic backdrop of the Belogradchik Rocks.

Return to Sofia via the scenic Iskar Gorge, one of the most beautiful driving routes in Bulgaria.

This tour takes you through a part of Bulgaria that remains largely undiscovered, where history, nature and local traditions are still closely connected. It is a journey of exploration, offering a rich and varied experience far from the usual tourist routes.
